On ne pratique pas l'histoire de la philosophie sans mobiliser plus ou moins consciemment un certain point de vue sur la philosophie, et toute histoire de la philosophie vient en retour conforter les conceptions dont elle est issue. D'où l'importance pour tout étudiant ou praticien de la philosophie de se mettre au clair avec les conceptions de l'histoire de la discipline. En explicitant les notions fondatrices de méthode, de philosophie de l'histoire, d'herméneutique, de relativisme, de lecture philosophique, cet ouvrage voudrait contribuer à l'élaboration d'une réflexion sur les manières d'historiciser la philosophie. Ce livre se veut, à cette fin, à la fois une référence et un outil. Die Korrespondenz des Politikers und Philosophen M. Tullius Cicero (106-43 v. Chr.) ist ein einzigartiges Quellenkorpus: Von keiner anderen Person der römischen Antike sind vergleichbar umfassende Selbstzeugnisse überliefert. In Ciceros Selbstdarstellung zeigt sich der Habitus einer Senatsaristokratie, deren soziales Feld durch das Netzwerk der Freundschaftsbeziehungen strukturiert ist. Die gesellschaftlichen Praktiken situieren sich in urbanen und ländlichen Räumen zwischen Italien und den Provinzen, die als Orte von Begegnung und Kommunikation unter Eliteangehörigen, aber auch zwischen diesen und sozial Untergeordneten dienen. Die Autorinnen und Autoren setzen in ihren Analysen der Cicero-Briefe aktuelle theoretische und methodologische Ansätze der historischen Anthropologie um und entwickeln neue Perspektiven auf die römische Sozialgeschichte. Mikrohistorische Lektüren lassen die geschlechtsspezifischen Bedingungen des Handelns erkennen, die Bedeutung von Krankheit und Tod und das Verhältnis zu griechischen Sklavinnen und Sklaven. In der Auseinandersetzung mit den deutsch- und französischsprachigen Forschungstraditionen römischer Sozialgeschichte entwerfen die Beiträge ein multiperspektivisches Bild des gesellschaftlichen Alltags im 1. It seems quite natural to explain the activities of human and non-human animals by referring to their special faculties. Thus, we say that dogs can smell things in their environment because they have perceptual faculties, or that human beings can think because they have rational faculties. But what are faculties? In what sense are they responsible for a wide range of activities? How can they be individuated? How are they interrelated? And why are different types of faculties assigned to different types of living beings? The six chapters in this book discuss these questions, covering a wide period from Plato up to contemporary debates about faculties as modules of the mind. They show that faculties were referred to in different theoretical contexts, but analyzed in radically different ways. Some philosophers, especially Aristotelians, made them the cornerstone of their biological and psychological theories, taking them to be basic powers of living beings. Others took them to be inner causes that literally produce activities, while still others provided a purely functional explanation. The chapters focus on various models, taking into account Greek, Arabic, Latin, French, German and Anglo-American debates. They analyze the role assigned to faculties in metaphysics, philosophy of mind and epistemology, but also the attack that was often launched against the assumption that faculties are hidden yet real features of living beings. The short "Reflections" inserted between the chapters make clear that faculties were also widely discussed in literature, science and medicine.
